Phase 1: 1500kW Paralleling generation replacement
Phase 2: ATS and panel replacement
Cynergy responded to the needs of this healthcare customer whose existing (3) 500kW 480V paralleled generators from approximately 1974 suffered a catastrophic failure. This system was located in a basement and was only accessible via an access pit. Together with WSP, Cynergy performed an in-kind design-build replacement of the generators with new MTU units, paralleled together with on-board controls technology and paralleling switchgear provided by SAI. Other work self-performed by Cynergy included lighting replacement, fuel piping modification, intake and exhaust louver/actuated damper installation, and exhaust system installation. The exhaust system was insulated by a certified insulation contractor. The facility’s specific healthcare needs could not allow for lack of backup power for greater than very brief durations, so a temporary trailer generator was used together with phased construction.
Phase 2 consisted of a load study to determine the loads on each of the building’s (7) Automatic Transfer Switches, and from this study it was determined that it was possible to reduce the quantity of switches down to (4). The switches used were ASCO 7000 series with bypass isolation. In phased manner, in close coordination with the operational personnel of the facility, each ATS group was replaced with due care to safety and efficiency of time.
